Title of bill
An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to allowing members of the police department to remain in service until age 65
Purpose or general idea of bill
The bill provides that termination of service of members of the New York City police force because of super-annuation may be at sixty-five years of age.
Summary of specific provisions
Amends section 14-124 of the administrative code of the city of New York to change the maximum age for police officers from sixty-three to sixty-five
Justification
Currently, under the administrative code of the city of New York (section 15-121), firefighters may remain in service until age 65. This legislation would give police officers of the city of New York parity with their fire fighting colleagues. Due to the fiscal and stressful nature of these jobs there is merit to having a maximum age limits, the additional two years provided for by this legislation will do little to hamper the job performance of the police officers.
Additionally, since the events of September 2001, many senior members have retired creating a leadership vacuum. Therefore, any efforts to retain veteran officers without compromising job safety and performance must be given serious consideration.
