Title of bill
An act relating to designating the former World Trade Center as the Freedom Tower
Purpose or general idea of bill
To make it a condition of any State grant, appropriation, contract, or lease agreement that the Port Authority re-designate One World Trade Center with its former name, Freedom Tower.
Summary of provisions
Creates a new unconsolidated law to make it a condition of State funding, including funding from grants or appropriations from the state or any State agency or any State authority, or contracts or any approval for payments for services from the State, a State agency or a State Authority, that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey redesignate the building now known as One World Trade Center as "Freedom Tower."
Justification
One World Trade Center is the main building of the new World Trade Center under construction in Lower Manhattan. The tower will be located in the northwest comer of the 16-acre World Trade Center site. On March 26, 2009, the Port Authority said that the building will be known as "One World Trade Center," its legal address, replacing its former name of "Freedom Tower." Many people, including relatives of 9/11 victims, have criticized the abandonment of the original name as nothing more than unpatriotic shedding of symbolism in favor of public relations and marketing by people who should know better.
