Title of bill

An act to amend the real property tax law, in relation to the real property tax exemption for Cold War veterans

Purpose or general idea of bill

To grant exemption, upon adoption of a local law to provide tax levies for such county, city, town, or village, after a public hearing contingent to city population.

Summary of provisions

This legislation would amend section 1, subdivision 3 of section 458-b of the Real Property Tax Law, as added by chapter 655 of the laws of 2007. A county, city, town, or village governing body can adopt a local law, after a public hearing, tax levies for such county, city, town, or village for a city with a population of one million or more, on or after December 31, 2009.

Justification

For their years of sacrifice, service and hard work, veterans of the Cold War would be entitled to tax exemptions on ownership of real property.

New York City was essentially unable to participate in this program because of time constraints. In order for the City of New York to choose participation in this program, this law would need to be amended for the allowance of opting in and participating in this program by a new set deadline.
