Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of state route 38 as the New York State Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Highway of Valor
Purpose or general idea of bill
To honor the eight million Americans who served our country during the Vietnam War era and, more particularly, to honor the 400,000 New Yorkers that served in our nation's armed forces during that era and to raise public consciousness about their service and sacrifice with the re-naming of a portion of state route 38.
Summary of specific provisions
This bill designates a portion of state route 38, from the point where it intersects with route one hundred four-a in the north thence in a generally southerly direction to the point of intersection with state route ninety-six, as the New York State Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Highway of Valor.
Justification
By some estimates, nearly half the men and women that served our nation during the Vietnam War era are now deceased. Many died without receiving the recognition that their nation truly appreciated their service and their sacrifice. In more recent years, Americans have set aside their views of the Vietnam War to recognize that it is just, fitting and proper that we honor these veterans in the same manner as veterans of other wars and conflicts. Other areas of the state have done so with fitting tributes. The Cayuga County Legislature now suggests that to re-name this portion of route 38 is particularly appropriate since it passes the final resting place of Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Specialist Robert F. Stryker, an Auburn native who was killed in action in Loc Ninh, Vietnam in 1967. The section of highway proposed to be re-named would also be near the home of Lauren Dates who served with the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade from February 1967 to February 1968 and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star Medal. This small gesture will go a long way to say to every Vietnam Veteran and each such veteran's family, that a grateful state and nation appreciates your service.
