Title of bill

An act to amend the executive law, in relation to designating August 20th as a day of commemoration to be known as "Staten Island Day"

Purpose of bill

To recognize August 20th as Staten Island Day in the State of New York

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1 amends subdivision 3 of Section 168-a of the Executive Law to add August 20th to be known as Staten Island Day.

Section 2 is the effective date.

Justification

The 60 square miles that composes Staten Island has been the home to countless innovators and American icons. Famed photography pioneer Alice Austen, Italian revolutionary and statesmen Giuseppe Garibaldi, disputed inventor of the telephone Antonio Meucci, poets Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau as well as six Pulitzer Prize winners, one First Lady, two U.S. Vice Presidents, and the first American Saint all called Staten Island home.

Staten Island's rich history doesn't stop with its famous inhabitants. In 1776, Staten Island was the site that activated peace conferences between the Continental Congress and the British Forces during the Revolutionary War. Staten Island is also home to the most famous boat ride in the world. A trip on the Staten Island Ferry will afford riders some of the best views in New York City. The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Verrazano and Brooklyn bridges, as well as the entire Manhattan skyline can be seen from the Staten Island Ferry, and all for free!

Today, Staten Island is considered the "borough of parks", boasting more parkland than any other borough in the City of New York. Staten Island is truly unique, incorporating rural habitat and wide open natural spaces in one of the most highly urbanized regions in the world. Now home to nearly as many people as the State of Wyoming, Staten Island continues to be the fastest growing county in the State of New York and a constant contributor.

Staten Island has long been overlooked and continuously goes unrecognized for its beauty, uniqueness and contributions to this State. Its rich history and current contributions to the State more than make Staten Island worthy of a designated day of commemoration which will allow this community the opportunity to demonstrate justifiable pride in our history, people and accomplishments that we have given to the State of New York, as well as to the people of this nation and world.
