BILL NUMBER:S4431B

Title of bill

An act to amend the executive law, in relation to the division of veter- ans' affairs providing information to veterans on how to start a veter- an-owned business

Purpose

To require the division of veterans affairs to provide information regarding resources that are available to assist veterans in establish- ing and sustaining a small business by maintaining a small business portal on the division's internet site.

Summary of provisions

The division may in consultation with the New York State Small Develop- ment Center and any other appropriate state agencies when establishing and sustaining a small business portal on the division of veterans' affairs website. The division shall include this information in its newsletter, at the three seminars sponsored sponsored by the division and be posted on the division's website and the annual report to the governor and legislature. Such information shall be maintained and updated annually. The information may be available in print form.

Justification

Veterans in New York State have been and continue to be vital to the small business enterprises in the State. New York State has done too little to assist veterans in playing a greater role in the economy by forming and expanding small business enterprises. Medical advances and new medical technologies have made it possible for service-disabled veterans to play a greater role in the formation and expansion of small business enterprises in New York State. New York State must provide additional assistance and support to veterans to better inform them on how to become an owner of small business and how to expand thereby enabling them to realize the American dream that they fought and protect. This bill is one step in the process.
