Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to directing a city school district having a population of one million or more to provide notice of bedbug infestations in public schools
Purpose or general idea of bill
To require New York City school health services to provide notification to the entire school community upon discovery of bed bugs.
Summary of specific provisions
This bill would require parents of New York City school children to receive notification from school health officials upon detection of bed bugs in their child's school.
The notification would enable parents to make more informed decisions as to the health and safety of their child and family.
Justification
Currently, if a bed bug is discovered in a school, only the family of the affected child is notified. Additional notifications are left up to the discretion of school health officials.
New Yorkers have grown increasingly concerned over the alarming rate of bed bug incidents in their community. Since bed bugs are notoriously difficult to exterminate and result in a serious emotional and financial impact, New Yorkers need to receive as much information as possible, as soon as possible.
