Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to including Aviation High School as a special high school in New York city
Purpose or general idea of bill
This bill adds Aviation High School to the list of special New York City high schools.
Summary of provisions
Adds Aviation High School to the existing list of NYC high schools which require admission by "solely and exclusively taking a competitive, objective and scholastic achievement examination". Aviation will be included in a list that currently includes Bronx High School of Science, Stuyvesant High School and Brooklyn High School.
Effects of present law which this bill would alter
It amends section one paragraphs (a) and (b) of subdivision twelve of section twenty-five hundred ninety-g of the Education Law, by adding Aviation High School to the list of special high schools.
Justification
Aviation High School is the only public school in NYS to offer the course leading to F.A.A. certification in air frame/power plant aviation mechanics and F.C.C. certification in avionics (aviation electricity). These technical programs lead to jobs with significant beginning salaries. To replace the screened admission process with an objective examination will promote fuller participation by all NYC students of all backgrounds. Given Aviation's unique technical professional opportunities, it should be in the same category as Brooklyn Technical High School and NYC's other specialized high schools.
Fiscal implications
This bill has no fiscal impact locally.
