Title of bill

An act requiring the Triborough bridge and tunnel authority to remove certain unused toll booths on the Verrazano-Narrows bridge

Purpose

This legislation requires the TBTA to remove unused eastbound tollbooths from the Verrazano-Narrows bridge.

Summary of provisions

This legislation requires the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA) to remove unused toll booths or unused toll collection devices that are in place from the eastbound lanes of the Staten Island Expressway leading to the eastbound Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Justification

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge has had a one-way (westbound) charge collection program since 1986. Even though no tolls are collected, the tollbooths remain standing in the eastbound direction. Because of this, eastbound motorists must slow down to 25 miles per hour through the plaza. The removal of the tollbooths will reaffirm the State's commitment to the residents of Staten Island to further improve air quality by reducing the pollution caused when eastbound traffic slows down to pass the tollbooths.
