Title of bill
An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to allowing certain members of the New York city employees' retirement system to obtain retirement credit for certain periods of maternity leave
Purpose
This bill would authorize members of the New York City Employees' Retirement System (NYCERS) employed as NYC deputy Sheriffs who were placed on maternity leave without pay because of pregnancy to be eligible for service credit.
Summary of provisions
The administrative code of the city is amended by adding a new section 13-117.1
Existing law
Chapter 594 of the Laws of 2000 provided this benefit to members of the New York City Police Department and Chapter 477 of 2005 provided this benefit to corrections members of the New York City Employees Retirement System.
Justification
Members of the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System are permitted by their employers to take leaves of absence for child care. Last year, the New York City Administrative Code was amended to permit members of the New York City Police Pension Fund to obtain this credit for the periods of child care leave. This bill would expand that concept to police officers and firefighters who are members of the State Retirement System.
