Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the suspension and disqualification of drivers licenses for failure to make child support payments

Purpose

To include the word "RESTRICTED" in bold face type on a restricted driver's license granted to a person whose license has been suspended for failure to make child support payments.

Summary of provisions

Paragraph 5 of subdivision 4-e of section 510 of the vehicle and traffic law, as amended by chapter 398 of the laws of 1997 is amended.

Justification

This bill would help to identify a situation where a person who has failed to make child support payments uses a restricted license. Previously, the person was restricted to drive to and from work, school, and medical and the person was issued a sheet of paper that he or she is relied on to present to an officer upon being pulled over. This bill would help to identify these "restricted" drivers to determine if they ate breaking any laws. Also, this bill would require that if a restricted license is granted, and the commissioner is notified of a person's failure to satisfy support arrears, the commissioner shall revoke any restricted use license granted.
