Title of bill
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting peace officer status to animal control officers employed by the county of Schuyler
Purpose
This bill would grant animal control officers employed by Schuyler County peace officer status.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of the bill amends section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law by adding a new subdivision 83 authorizing animal control officers employed by Schuyler County to be given peace officer status.
Section 2 of the bill provides that the bill shall take effect immediately.
Justification
This legislation comes at the request of the Office of the Sheriff of Schuyler County. The Animal Control Officer in Schuyler County is an essential position investigating animal cruelty complaints as well as issuing summonses for violations of state and local laws. When the current Animal Control Officer was hired in Schuyler County it was assumed that this individual was a Peace Officer under the Criminal Procedure Law. This legislation remedies said oversight by granting Animal Control Officers in Schuyler County Peace Officer status.
