BILL NUMBER:S5743B
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to the designation of a portion of the state highway system to be known as the "Sampson Veterans Memorial highway"
Purpose or general idea of bill
This bill designates a portion of state route 96A, in Seneca County, to be designated as the "Sampson Veterans Memorial Highway".
Summary of specific provisions
This bill designates a portion of the state highway system constituting Route 96A, from State Route 5 and United States Route 20 in the town of Waterloo, Seneca County, continuing in a southerly direction along route 96A to its intersection with state route 414 in the village of Ovid, Seneca County, as the "Sampson Veterans Memorial Highway".
Justification
The State of New York recently transferred a parcel of land in Sampson State Park, formerly part of the Sampson Air Force and Naval Base, from the State of New York to Seneca County which will be the site of the new Sampson Veterans Cemetery. The site of the proposed cemetery, the Sampson United States Naval and Air Force Base, served as a naval training station during World War II and was later used as an Air Force Basic Training Center. The Sampson Memorial Naval Museum and Air Force Museum are currently located at this site.
New York State Route 96A serves as the principal point of access to both museums and the cemetery. Designation of Route 96A as the
"Sampson Veterans Memorial Highway" would serve to further memorialize the efforts of our county's service men and women.
