Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to reimbursement of certain transportation costs provided by the district for public and non-public schools

Purpose

This legislation would amend the education law to allow both public and non-public schools to obtain transportation for those students in grades kindergarten through six. Few schools in NYC end by five or later and have no transportation provided for these students. This will provide safe transportation to these students which attend extended school days.

Summary of provisions

Kids in kindergarten through second grade that live at least one-half mile from their school and those kids in grades three through six that live at least a mile away are eligible to obtain school bus transportation. The transportation cost which is aidable shall be considered for ordinary contingent expense by the district. The district is not required to reimburse the schools if they exceed the amount of such district would spend to provide transportation services for such child if the district were to provide the transportation directly.
