Title of bill

An act to amend the town law, in relation to providing a residential membership exemption for volunteer firefighters in Rockland Lake fire district in Rockland County

Purpose

This bill will allow Rockland Lake fire district to be exempt from the residential membership requirement.

Summary of provisions

Section amends section 176-b of the town law by adding Rockland Lake fire district in Rockland County to the districts that are exempt from the nonresident membership limit.

JUSTIFICATION Rockland Lake fire district is a unique district because it encompasses Rockland Lake state park. It has approximately 50-60 residences within the district which has hindered its efforts in recruiting and retaining members. The current 45% non-resident membership has placed their fire district with limited members. The geography and topography of the district includes a lake, a popular park attraction and the Hudson river has made fire protection challenging. This bill would allow the fire district to look outside the district for potential membership while maintaining a high standard of fire protection.
