Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to requiring all teachers to complete training in the area of autism and directing the commissioner of education to assure that such training is included in all teacher certification programs
Purpose or general idea of bill
The purpose of this bill is to require all teachers to receive autism training, not only those who are seeking special education certification.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1: This bill removes all references to "special education" from subdivision 4 of section 3004 of the education law, leaving the requirement for autism training applicable to all teachers seeking certification.
Justification
Approximately 1 out of 150 children has an autistic spectrum disorder. These children are often undiagnosed/under diagnosed. Teachers lack the appropriate training to assist with early identification and intervention. The training curriculums already exist, yet they are optional and not often utilized. This bill makes this very important training mandatory for all teachers seeking certification.
