Title of bill

An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to allowing the use of rifles for hunting in Ontario county; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof

Purpose

This bill would allow the hunting of deer and bear through the use of a rifle in Ontario County south of NYS Route 20 for two years.

Justification

Ontario County has requested that they be included in those areas where sportsmen and women are able to hunt deer and bear with rifles south of NYS Route 20. Since 2005, several counties in Southern and Central New York have been allowing the hunting of deer and bear with rifles with few if any reported incidents or other problems. With that safe history, and given the rural nature of Ontario County south of NYS Route 20, it would seem to only make sense to now include Ontario County within these provisions as they have requested.
