Justification
The U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps Act of the 1943 was developed to meet the needs of civilian hospitals to replace graduate nurses during World War II. Approximately 8,000 nursing students from New York State took part in that program. In 1986, the federal government recognized this wartime service which permitted active federal employees to receive retirement credit for the period of training as a student nurse as approved under the Cadet Nurse Corps Act of 1943.
The purpose of this bill is to provide similar recognition to the nursing student for the time they spent in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps Program. These individuals were an important factor in the care of the civilian population throughout the United States during World War II and enabled New York State to keep its civilian hospitals operational. Enactment of this bill would give long overdue recognition to this dedicated group of individuals who played a very important role in the defense of our country during World War II.
Fiscal implications
None to the state.
