Title of bill
An act to repeal part H of chapter 59 of the laws of 2009 amending the vehicle and traffic law relating to the fee for number plates
Purpose
This legislation eliminates the reissuance of license plate requirement and corresponding fee increase as contained in the 2009-2010 New York State Budget.
Summary of provisions
Part H of chapter 59 of the laws of 2009, amending the vehicle and traffic law relating to the fee for number plates, is repealed.
Justification
Under a provision of the 2009-10 New York State Budget, every New Yorker must purchase a new license plate in April whether they need one or not.
The plan requires motorists to purchase new license plates over a two year period beginning April 1, 2010, as their registration comes due. New plates will cost each vehicle owner an extra $25 and generate a total of $130 million in revenue for the state.
The new plates are in addition to the increase in driver's license and motor vehicle fees that took effect September 1, 2009. New Yorkers can ill afford this unnecessary State money grab during these most difficult fiscal times. The reissuance of license plates must be repealed.
