Purpose

The installation of speed bumps and traffic spikes on highway ramps

Summary of provisions

Section one amends the highway law by adding a new section 67 for the installation of speed bumps and traffic spikes on highway ramps to prevent motorists from entering the highway in the wrong direction. The commissioner may promulgate rules, regulations and requirements:

(a) establishing the number of traffic spike units to be used; and

(b) establishing the placement and use of such units.

The commissioner shall authorize and direct all rules and regulations necessary for the implementation of the provisions of this section.

Justification

There have been numerous fatal crashes involving wrong way drivers on New York interstate highways. The use of speed bumps with spikes will disable the vehicle from entering highways in the wrong direction.
