Title of bill
An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to fees and charges for distinctive plates for purple heart recipients
Purpose
This bill waives the standard initial fee charged by the Department of Motor Vehicles for costs associated with issuing distinctive license plates for those veterans who are age 62 years of age or older and who have received a purple heart medal and wish to obtain a distinctive purple heart license plate.
Summary of provisions
Section 1: Amends Vehicle & Traffic Law section 404-e(3) so that no purple heart recipient is required to pay the initial fee at charge for the issuance of the distinctive purple heart license plate. The purple hear recipient must be 62 years of age or older.
Existing law
Under current law, purple heart recipients must pay the $15.00 fee to the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain the distinctive purple heart license plate.
Justification
The Purple Heart medal is a decoration that embodies the special sacrifice which has been made by our men and women who have been wounded or killed-ill-action in the service of their country. The individuals who wear the Purple Heart have earned the right to obtain privileges for their sacrifice. This legislation seeks to further acknowledge this sacrifice by exempting Purple Heart recipients from having to pay the standard initial costs associated with ordering a distinctive NYS Purple Heart license plate.
