Title of bill
An act to amend the religious corporations law, in relation to the annual election of the trustees of a free Methodist church
Purpose
This bill eliminates the time period during which a free Methodist church must hold its annual election of trustees.
Summary of provisions
Section 1: Eliminates the requirement that trustees must be elected within three months of the annual society meeting.
Section 2: Effective date.
Justification
This bill has been requested by the free Methodist church because § 225-f of the Religious Corporations Law, stipulates that they must elect trustees within three months of when they hold their annual conference.
This is problematic because their annual society meeting to elect trustees cannot be held until June or July, which is longer than the three months requirement.
Other denominations do not have such restriction, and they have requested the change in law to help them administer their organization more effectively.
Legislative history
This is new legislation.
Fiscal implications
None.
Effective date
This act shall take effect immediately.
