Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to authorizing temporary parking permits for women in their third trimester of pregnancy

Purpose

To authorize temporary parking permits to alleviate some of the physical stresses that women face late in pregnancy.

Summary of provisions

Section 1203-a in the vehicle and traffic law will be amended to allow women in their third trimester of their pregnancy to receive a temporary parking permit.

Justification

Temporary permits are distributed to individuals who cannot ambulate without the help of an assisting device such as a cane, wheelchair, walker etc. Many women get physically impairing symptoms while pregnant. During the third trimester of a woman's pregnancy her body changes dramatically; backaches, swelling of the feet and ankles, shortness of breath and fatigue are often symptoms women face during their final months in maternity. This act will alleviate some of these struggles by giving women the choice to receive a temporary parking permit if they feel they need it.

These parking permits will also help women that already have children and are late in their pregnancy. Many times it can be difficult for women to be so far along in maternity and have the responsibility of other children. These parking permits will make the walking distance shorter and easier for the expectant mother.
