BILL NUMBER:S6841C
Title of bill
An act authorizing the Mikveh Association of Oceanside to file an appli- cation for a real property tax exemption
Purpose
To authorize Mikvah Association to file an application with the Nassau County Assessor's office for a real property tax exemption.
Summary of provisions
Sections One and Two - This bill would authorize and direct the Assessor of the County of Nassau to accept an application for exemption from real property taxes pursuant to Section 420-a of the Real Property Tax Law for certain taxes-owed by the Mikvah Association.
Justification
This legislation would provide the Mikvah Association with an exemption from real property taxes pursuant to section 420-a of the real property tax law for the 2007-2008 final assessment roll, with respect, to the school taxes for the 2007-2008 school year, and the 2008 general tax assessment roll for property purchased by the not-for-profit entity at 3397 Park Avenue, Oceanside, New York 11572. This parcel of land located in Oceanside has been exempt from real property taxes since the date that this exempt organization purchased the property. Unfortunate- ly, the organization did not file timely for the 2007/2008 tax year. And as a result of being unable to renew for property tax exempt status, the Mikvah Association has been liable for a year of property taxes despite their not-for-profit status. The organization has been filing the annual renewal application for exemption from real property taxes in a timely manner for a number of years. The association does not have available funds in order to pay the assessment of real property taxes for the year in question. In order to preserve the community's organization for the use by its residents, it needs the requested relief from real property taxes.
