Title of bill
An act to amend the public health law, in relation to the development of a nutrition and fitness website by the department of health
Summary of provisions
Section 1: Require the NYS Department of Health, in conjunction with the NYS Department of Education, the NYS PTA and other relevant school organizations, to develop a nutrition and fitness website database that will provide day care providers and parents with information available to fight childhood obesity, including but not limited to portion sizes and recommended number of servings of fruits, vegetables, etc. per day. The following information shall also be provided as part of the website:
* Nutritional guidelines (as found on the USDA website);
* Sample menus to offer menu suggestions based on the nutritional guidelines, as well as alternative menus for children with allergies or health problems;
* Examples of age appropriate physical activities; and
* Updated information regarding nutrition and obesity issues.
The website would be free, on-line, via the NYS Department of Health website.
Justification
The American Academy of pediatrics states that obesity is now the most common medical condition of childhood. The optimal time to address this epidemic is in early childhood. Day care providers and parents need to know that their children are being nourished properly and are engaging in physical activities that will help prevent obesity from developing. Finding a way to provide day care facilities and parents with easy access to age-appropriate guidelines is essential in preventing childhood obesity. Helping day care providers and parents keep up with the latest information in this field is one way to assure that children will have a healthier start in life. The NYS Senate Democratic Conference is committed to fighting this serious problem and to eliminating the negative effects childhood obesity has on NYS's children.
