Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the town of Ellicott as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge"
Purpose
To recognize the historic significance of Robert H. Jackson to the Jamestown area by naming the bridge on Interstate 86 which crosses over Strunk Road in the Town of Ellicott as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge."
Summary of provisions
Section 1. Adds a new Section 342-mm to the highway law designating a portion of interstate route eighty-six as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge."
Section 2. Provides that the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage reflecting the ceremonial designation of this bridge as the "Robert H. Jackson Memorial Bridge."
Justification
In recognition of former United States Supreme Court Justice Robert Houghwout Jackson, the naming of this bridge near Jamestown, where he grew up and spent much of his life, will honor his memory, while distinguishing the Jamestown area as having held a significant role in his life. Robert H. Jackson is regarded as one of the most influential Supreme Court Justices of the 20th century, having also served as the chief United States prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials following World War II. This dedication will help to recognize his role and influence in American history while promoting the Jamestown area as a popular tourist destination.
