Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to creating the Lucille Ball distinctive plate

Purpose

To authorize and direct the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles to establish and issue distinctive Lucille Ball license plates.

Summary of provisions

Section 1. Adds a new subdivision (x) to Section 404 of the vehicle and traffic law to establish and issue distinctive Lucille Ball license plates. Provides that the Department of Motor Vehicles shall consult with the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center in formulating an appropriate design for this plate. Requires an additional annual service charge of twenty-five dollars per license plate to be deposited to the credit of the Department of Motor Vehicles Distinctive Plate Development Fund, to be used for the production, design, advertising, and marketing of distinctive plates.

Justification

Next year marks the centenary of the birth of Lucille Ball, best known as the star of the television show "I Love Lucy," in Jamestown, New York, in 1911. In light of this occasion and in recognition of the enormous popularity and influence she enjoyed throughout her long career, the issuance of distinctive license plates in her honor will distinguish Jamestown as having held a significant role in her life, while helping to promote the area as a popular tourist destination.
