Title of bill
An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to liability insurance coverage for taxicabs and liveries, safety training for delinquent taxi drivers, and requiring taxis to display the taxi and limousine commission's complaint number on their bumpers
Purpose or general idea of bill
To increase the amount of liability insurance coverage that taxis have to carry, to require a complaint line about the operation of a taxi to be adequately staffed and to provide for mandatory safety training after 5 infractions.
Summary of specific provisions
Adds new section 19-504.5 and amends sections 19-505 and 19-506 of the administrative code of New York City.
Justification
New York City taxis have become notorious for their driving habits on the streets of the city and accidents involving taxis far exceed those of other vehicles on the streets. Furthermore, taxis are not required to have adequate insurance coverage if someone is injured or killed.
This bill will require that taxis increase their amount of liability coverage to $100,000 for bodily injury and $200,000 for death. It also requires the TLC complaint number to be prominently posted on the rear bumper of all cabs in New York City; require the TLC hotline to be staffed during rush hours and compel any driver with five infractions against them to go through a mandatory safety course.
