BILL NUMBER:S7137B
Title of bill
An act to amend the education law and the general municipal law, in relation to requiring that certain plumbing or electrical work on a school building be performed by a licensed master plumber or licensed electrician
Purpose or general idea of the bill
The purpose of this bill is to ensure electrical and plumbing work done on school buildings is performed by licensed professionals if required by a local municipality.
Summary of provisions
This bill adds a new section to Education Law, and amends the General Municipal Law, to require all plumbing and electrical work valued over ten thousand dollars that is to be performed on any school building or appurtenant facility to be completed by or under the supervision of a licensed master plumber or licensed electrician if required by the local municipality where the building or facility is located.
Justification
Electrical and plumbing projects are expensive and risky if performed incorrectly. If problems occur, they can cause harm, financial and tangible, to the school building and students.
This legislation would ensure that any electrical or plumbing work performed on school buildings is carried out by licensed professionals if required by the local municipality. This will save school districts money, and lower property taxes, by helping to prevent the potential remediation and liability resulting from shoddy work.
