Title of bill

An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to establishing the open season for hunting coyote

Purpose

To extend the hunting season for coyote.

Summary of provisions

Section 1 amends paragraph o of subdivision 2 of section 11-0905 of the environmental conservation law to extend the open hunting season of coyote from October 1 through May 31.

Section 2 This act shall take effect immediately.

Existing law

Currently the coyote hunting season is October 1 through March 28.

Justification

Concerns have been raised that the deer and other wildlife populations in Essex County and other areas of the state suffers from severe depredation during the winter months from coyotes attacking, chasing or worrying deer and other wildlife.

The coyote population has ballooned and over-population exists which further endangers and harasses landowner's pets and farm animals in addition to the deer, rabbit, turkey, grouse and other small game population.
