Title of bill

An act to amend the social services law, in relation to expedited service in the food stamp program

Purpose

Provides that an applicant shall receive assistance within the next business day if they are determined to be eligible for the food stamp program.

Summary of provisions

Adds new subdivision 12 to Section 95 of the Social Services Law, which provides that a person who qualifies for expedited food stamps shall receive them by the next business day following application.

Justification

Current regulations provide that a decision does not need to be made on an application for expedited food stamps for 5 days. If a family is without money for food, they can turn to a food pantry; but the maximum amount of food they will receive is 2-3 days worth. Five days is to long to wait, when with government technology a preliminary decision can be made in a day.

Legislative history

New bill.

Fiscal implications

Effective date

This act shall take effect on the thirtieth day after it shall have become a law.
