Title of bill

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY proposing an amendment to article 1 of the constitution, in relation to equal pay for equal work

Purpose

To provide pay equity for all persons for work of comparable skill, effort and responsibility performed under similar working conditions.

Justification

The New York State Constitution is silent on the issue of equity in pay. Studies have shown inequalities for women in the workforce in many areas. New York State Women receive only seventy-three cents for every dollar earned by men, despite the fact that women deserve equal compensation.

Fiscal implications

None.

Effective date

The foregoing amendment shall be referred to the next general election of members of the legislature and, in conformity with section 1 of article 19 of the constitution, be published for 3 months previous to the time of such election.
