Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to allowing a combination of vehicles to be operated on certain roads

Purpose

To authorize tandem trailer combination vehicles to travel on certain Central New York roadways.

Summary of provisions

Section 1 of the bill sets forth the description of the combination of tandem trailer route, providing that combination vehicles may operate on Route 57 between Thruway Exit 38 and the Liverpool Bypass, between the Liverpool Bypass and Morgan Road, and along Morgan Road to and from the distribution facility at 7272 Morgan Road, a distance of 1.2 miles. The legislation also provides that the Commissioner of Transportation must certify that the vehicle or combination of vehicles can operate safely along the designated route and that no applicable federal law, regulation or other requirement prohibits the operation of such vehicle or combination of vehicles on such route.

Justification

Raymour and Flanigan, one of Central New York's largest employers, maintains its corporate headquarters and New York State Distribution Center in Onondaga County. Currently, Raymour and Flanigan trucks must make multiple trips between the distribution center and the Thruway tandem lots located at Exit 36 and 35. This legislation will reduce truck trips and distances traveled, thereby benefiting the community as a whole and reducing vehicle emissions while allowing Raymour and Flanigan to distribute its products more efficiently.
