BILL NUMBER:S7700C

Title of bill

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to amending the description of the "Senator Warren M. Anderson Expressway" and in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system in the village of Port Dickinson, in the county of Broome, as the "Officer Aldo Rossi Junior Memorial Highway"

Purpose or general idea of bill

This bill designates a portion of state highway system in the county of Broome, as the "Officer Aldo Rossi Junior Memorial Highway".

Summary of provisions

Section 1. Section 342-u of the highway law, as added by chapter 430 of the laws of 1989.

Section 2. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 343-x.

Section 3. Designates the commissioner of transportation to provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to sections 1 & 2 of this act.

Section 4. Sets the effective date as immediately.

Justification

Police Officer Aldo Rossi Junior, age 42, was killed on July 27, 2008 when he was struck by a drunk driver while on duty. Officer Aldo Rossi Jr. was, at the time of his death, serving in the Village of Port Dickinson Police Department. It has been proposed to designate a portion of the state highway system in the village of Port Dickinson as a fitting memorial to his service. A petition has circulated in the past few months and as of May 4, 2010 it has received 2183 signatures in support of renaming the highway in honor of Aldo Rossi Jr.

Fiscal implications

Very minimal for placement of signs.

Effective date

This act shall take effect immediately.
