Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to making election day a school holiday

Purpose

This bill would make a general or special election day a school holiday.

Summary of provisions

Section 1: Subdivision 8 of section 3604 of the education law is amended to make a general or special election day a school holiday. In addition, a deficiency not exceeding two days during any school year caused by a general and/or special election shall be excused by the commissioner. Section 2: Effective date

Justification

In many areas throughout New York State polling places are located in schools. This allows people who normally do not have access to schools to legally enter them on election day. The large numbers of people going to a polling place in a school can be dangerous to children because school personnel will not know who is on school grounds. This bill would end this security risk and protect children by making a general or special election day a school holiday. In addition, this bill would not effect school aid.
