Title of bill

An act to amend the military law, in relation to veterans housing benefits

Purpose

This bill would provide that any program for the provision of housing for veterans, which receives governmental funding, shall not impose a requirement or prior term of residency upon the veteran.

Summary of specific provisions

Specifically, this bill would add a new section 235-b to the Military law, to provide that notwithstanding any inconsistent provision of law to the contrary, any program for the provision of law housing for veterans, which receives funding or assistance from any state or local source or public authority, shall not impose a requirement or prior term of residence upon the veteran who is to receive any benefit awarded by such housing program, including but not limited to a reduced cost housing benefit

Justification

This bill seeks to remove all residency requirements for any veterans housing program, which receives funding or assistance from any state or local source or public authority.

Veterans who choose to locate in New York State, receive housing in order to advance their education or start a business, should not be subject to residency requirement. New York State should be looking to attract such talented, public service minded individuals, and should promote their relocation to our state.
