Title of bill

An act to amend the town law, in relation to volunteer members of the Boght Community fire district

Purpose or general idea of the bill

To allow for the Boght Community Fire District to be exempt from the requirement that no more than forty-five percent of the company's membership be non-resident members.

Summary of specific provisions

Section one of the bill adds the Boght Community Fire District as a fire company that is exempt from the requirement that no more than forty-five percent of its membership consist of nonresident members.

Justification

In this economic climate, it is very difficult for some volunteer fire companies to recruit new members. The Boght Community Fire District, due to its location on the boundary of the City of Cohoes, attracts individuals from the city of Cohoes who want to participate in the fire service and are willing to drive the 1-2 miles from their residences to the firehouse. The Boght Community Fire District received several applications which were approved yet were unable to accept these new members because of the requirement that no more than forty-five percent of its volunteer firefights may be non-residents. This requirement is a hardship for the company with regards to staffing, meriting an exemption.
