BILL NUMBER:S7933
Title of bill
An act to amend the town law, in relation to including Cherry Grove fire district as among those districts that have elections on the second Tuesday in July
Purpose
To change the election date for the Cherry Grove Fire District from December to July.
Summary of provisions
This bill amends subdivision 1 of section 175 of the town law to include the Cherry Grove fire district in those fire districts which hold their elections on the second Tuesday in July.
Justification
Currently the Cherry Grove fire district is the only fire district on Fire Island to have its elections in December. This has proven problematic because many of the property owners of this district do not reside in the area during this time and are unable to vote in the elections. This bill will change the election date for the Cherry Grove fire district to the second Tuesday in July. Having elections held in July will increase participation in the elections and bring Cherry Grove in line with other fire districts on Fire Island.
