BILL NUMBER:S7947A
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of state route 32 as the Trooper David J. Lane Memorial Highway
Purpose
The purpose of the legislation is to designate a portion of the State Route 32 as the "Trooper David J. Lane Memorial Highway."
Summary of provisions
Section 1 amends the Highway Law by adding a new Section 342-uu providing that a 2.1 mile portion of the state highway system, constituting State Route 32 between Cairo Junction Road and Hearts Content Road in Greene County, shall be designated and known as the "Trooper David J. Lane Memorial Highway. "
Section 2 of the bill states that the commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system. The designation of this highway shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
Justification
Trooper Lane died in the line of duty in an automobile accident while on patrol in the town of Catskill on November 4,2009. He was a four year veteran of the State Police who previously served the United States of America in two combat tours (one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan) as a Bomb Disposal Technician in the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army.
A portion of the state highway system, which is to be designed and known as the "Trooper David J. Lane Memorial Highway," will serve as a reminder to us all of the selflessness, courage and honor which Trooper Lane showed throughout his service to the state as a member of the New York State Police.
Legislative history
New bill.
Fiscal implications
This legislation would effectively have no fiscal impact on state and local governments. The NYS Department of Transportation would be required to develop modest signage to mark the designated section of NYS Route 32.
