BILL NUMBER:S8007

An act to amend the election law, in relation to the definition of "party"

Summary of provisions

Subdivision 3 of section 1-104 of the election law is amended to allow any political organization to qualify as a formal political party in New York State in any of its candidates for statewide office garner fifty thousand votes or more.

Under existing law in order to qualify for a formal ballot line a party needs to garner 50,000 votes on its line for governor. If a party does not meet this threshold then they lose official ballot status in the state.
