BILL NUMBER:S8010
Title of bill
An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to establishing the antler restriction program
Purpose
The purpose of the bill is to create in law the yearling buck protection program in the four wildlife management units affected.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 amends the environmental conservation law by adding a new section 11-0914 creating a yearling buck protection program. "Antlered deer" and "wildlife management unit" are defined. The program will apply to wildlife management units 4G, the portion of unit 3A north of State Route 28, and the portions of wildlife units 4R and 4S in Greene County. The program applies to all public and private land within the wildlife management unit. Hunters under the age of 17 are exempted from the restrictions.
Existing law
Currently, the DEC has an antler restriction program in wildlife management units 3C, 3H, 3J and 3K. Local supporters, including local governments, have requested an expansion of the program into additional wildlife management units.
