BILL NUMBER:S8291
Title of bill
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to allowing constables on Fishers Island to carry firearms
Purpose
This bill allows constables on Fishers Island to carry firearms.
Summary of provisions
Section 1-Subdivision 18 of section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law, as amended by Chapter 224 of the Laws of 1998.
Section 2 contains the effective date.
Justification
Right now the only security that Fishers Island has is one State Trooper who leaves the island in January and constables the entire year around are not permitted to carry firearms. There have been numerous robberies and incidences where the constables have not felt safe because of their lack of protection. They must go though firearms training, all training that Suffolk police must undergo but are not permitted to carry firearms. This legislation would allow for Fishers Island constables to carry firearms.
