BILL NUMBER:S8452

Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the maximum vehicle length

Purpose

This legislation would extend the maximum vehicle length for buses and coaches operating in New York State from 45 feet to 50 feet.

Summary of provisions

Amends paragraph c of subdivision 3 of section 385 of the vehicle and traffic law as amended by chapter 493 of the laws of 2003 to extend the length of buses and coaches from forty five feet to fifty feet.

Justification

Current New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow for the operation of buses or coaches that exceed 45 feet in length. No exemptions are provided for the statutory length restrictions. Technological advances in manufacturing these vehicles have rendered the 45 foot maximum obsolete. The extended length also provides an environmental benefit. The 50 foot buses can transport more passengers on one vehicle, saving on fuel and emissions.
