BILL NUMBER:S1735

Title of bill

An act to amend the executive law, in relation to creating the office of nutrition and fitness

Purpose or general idea of bill

To create an office of nutrition and fitness in order to address the issue of obesity in children and adults.

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1 - This bill would amend the executive law by adding a new article 24-A, which would create the office of nutrition and fitness and its directors, powers and duties.

Justification

The New York State Department of Health has determined that the percentage of New York State adults who are overweight or obese increased from 42% in 1997 to 57% in 2002. Obesity among children and adolescents has tripled over the past three decades. Obesity-related illnesses cost New York state more than $6 billion. These staggering figures need to be addressed with a new office of nutrition and fitness that will target obesity in New York. This office could have the potential to decrease cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cancer and osteoarthritis.
