BILL NUMBER:S1753
Title of bill
An act to amend the elder law, in relation to requiring the state office for the aging to review programs addressing the needs of the aging veteran population
Purpose or general idea of bill
Requires the director of the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) to periodically review the programs offered by NYSOFA to ensure that they are appropriately responding to the needs of New York State's Military Veterans population.
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1. Amends the Elder Law, Section 202, by adding a new subdivision 15. Requires the director, in consultation with the director of the division of veteran's affairs, to periodically review programs operated by NYSOFA to ensure that the needs of the State's aging veteran population are being met and to develop improvements to programs to meet those needs.
Section 2. Effective Date
Existing law
Elder Law; Article 2, Programs for the Elderly; Title 1, State Office for the Aging; Section 202, General Powers and Duties of Office
Justification
New York State has the second largest population of military veterans in the nation. Many of New York's veterans proudly served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Because of the high concentration of veterans that participated in these conflicts, New York's veteran population is highly concentrated with people approaching and over the age of 60. At this time, many of these people are accessing NYSOFA programs, however there is no requirement that these programs be specifically tailored or responsive to the needs and desires of New York's Veterans. This bill would require the NYSOFA director and the director of the division of veteran's affairs to collaborate and review NYSOFA programs to ensure that they are catering to the needs of New York's veterans.
