BILL NUMBER:S1757

Title of bill

An act to amend the volunteer ambulance workers' benefit law, in relation to granting the emergency medical technicians preference to medical school admissions to all schools which receive funding from New York state

Purpose

This legislation would grant EMTs preference for admission to medical schools which receive funding from New York State.

Summary of provisions

The volunteer Ambulance workers' benefit law is amended by adding a new section 26.

Justification

The service provided by volunteer EMTs is invaluable to the communities in which they serve. This selflessness, coupled with the knowledge and experience they acquire as an Emergency Medical Technician, serves as great preparation for medical school.

This legislation would reward volunteer EMTs for their service by granting them preferential treatment when applying to medical schools, and may provide an incentive for those interested in the field of medicine to volunteer their time.

Legislative history

2009-10: S.2145; 2007-08: S.3418.

Fiscal implications

None.
