BILL NUMBER:S205

Title of bill

An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to requiring events related to veterans be displayed on a bulletin board

Purpose or general idea of bill

This legislation would allow each county, city, town or village to adopt a local law to provide a bulletin board to be conspicuously displayed in such municipality building holding its local legislative body or municipal offices. Veterans would be able to display information regarding veterans including benefits or upcoming related events.

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1 adds a new section 99-v to the General Municipal Law to allow each county, city, town or village to adopt a local law to provide a bulletin board to be placed in the municipality building holding its local legislative body or municipal offices and allow veteran organization to display information.

Section 2 makes the effective date on the ninetieth day after it has become a law, provided, that effective immediately, the addition, amendment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for the implementation of this act on its effective date are authorized and directed to be made and completed on or before such effective date.

Justification

With more and more veterans coming home from the ongoing conflict in Iraq, it is important to continue our dedication to civic involvement of our veterans. By allowing municipalities to conspicuously post a bulletin board detailing information important to our veterans we will ensure that they can receive information that is important to them.
