BILL NUMBER:S2165
Title of bill
An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to designating police officers of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as peace officers
Purpose
This bill would designate Veterans Administration police officers as peace officers.
Summary of provisions
Section 2.15 of the criminal procedure law is amended to designate police officers of the United States Department of Veterans Administration as peace officers.
Justification
The United State Department of Veterans Affairs is the uniformed police service of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, responsible for the protection of the VA Medical Centers and other facilities operated by United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Health Administration. The VA Police have several divisions and operate separately but alongside the VA Law Enforcement Training Center (VA LETC) under the umbrella of the Office of Security and Law Enforcement.
Designating police officers of the Veterans Administration as peace officers would enable these officers to legally bring cases before city, county, and state courts.
