BILL NUMBER:S253

Title of bill

An act to amend the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation to providing free use of state parks for senior citizens

Purpose

To allow residents age sixty-two and older free access to state parks in New York, including on weekends and holidays.

Summary of provisions

Section 1 amends the parks, recreation and historic preservation law by adding § 13.20 allowing New York State residents age sixty-two and older free use of state parks, including on weekends and public holidays.

Section 2 is the effective date.

Justification

Currently, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation allows senior citizens free access to state parks on any weekday (except holidays) under the Golden Park Program. This limitation prevents seniors from enjoying the benefits of state parks on the days on which they are most likely to want to go. Granting senior citizens free access at all times would allow them to truly enjoy state parks.
