BILL NUMBER:S2562
Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to requiring a curriculum of study in sensitivity training regarding diversity of race, ethnicity and religion
Purpose
This bill requires a course of instruction in sensitivity training regarding diversity.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 amends the education law by adding a new section 801-b. The regents shall prescribe courses of instruction to be maintained and followed in the schools to train pupils about diversity of race, ethnicity, and religion. The regents shall prepare the guidelines for the implementation of local programs that promote understanding, awareness and appreciation of people with various backgrounds. Courses will be provided to instruct teachers.
Section 2 is the enacting clause. This bill shall take effect the first of September next succeeding the date it shall become law.
Justification
It is unfortunate that our state must resort to diversity and sensitivity training in our schools. However, a rash of hate-driven crimes in Brooklyn and throughout our state has left no alternative. Swastikas have been spray painted on neighborhood synagogues and parked cars in Jewish communities. Racism continues to be a problem in our schools and in the workplace. Teaching children to understand and appreciate the differences between cultures and religions will help to encourage acceptance at a young age and on into adulthood.
